I have loved music my entire life. Well, let’s clear that up. I have always loved it, but I haven’t always taken as good of care as it as I should have. My mom and dad, especially my sweet mother constantly had to prompt me and remind me to practice piano. You see, my parents gave me the gift of piano lessons from the mini age of two, until my high school graduation at eighteen years young. Looking back, would I have practiced more? Definitely. I wouldn’t have taken for granted the gift of music lessons in my life. My teacher, Gail Barnes, was something beyond amazing. She was truly gifted not only with music, but also in teaching it to undeserving students such as myself. To this day I am still unsure of how she found the patience to deal with my weekly lessons where it was painfully apparent that other things than practicing had occupied my time that week. I remember sitting at her concert, when she released her own CD of music, and feeling this overwhelming sense and desire to want to be as good as she was. I didn’t reach that point, and probably never will seeing as she’s seriously flawless, but she planted that fire in me to keep music a part of my life forever.
High school choir was a one of a kind experience. Let’s just say our choir was intense. But we were all like family. Norma Freeman, was our director. I have never met such an independent, head strong, determined individual such as herself. Norma was unlike any other director in the state, probably in the entire world actually. And I mean this in a good way. Back then we thought some of her methods were pretty quirky but her methods worked. We won state more times than any other choir I’m sure of. Also, my senior year she invited me to join an elite and exclusive group called “Chamber Choir.” Chamber Choir was originally a choir that you could be in once you were in your older high school years, and anyone could sign up, but this year, due to funds dropping and school cutbacks, chamber choir became it’s own class within our regular choir class. So not only did we participate in our choir class, but we learned and performed all new songs for our Chamber Choir group as well. Chamber Choir was my favorite. We even were able to take a trip to Chicago to perform and compete for a couple of days. It’s a trip I’ll never forget.
Most of my hopes and dreams involve my husband and I, our future family, and music. Music is right up there at the top of my dreams. If I could have one dream come true I would choose to be a famous musician. Not for the glory and fame myself but to be able to influence people for the better through music. I would sing country and Broadway and some pop when I felt like it. Obviously you can tell I have thought about this stuff. I actually daydream about it often because it’s going to happen. One day you’re going to see my name in lights. And I can’t wait for that day and to bring the people I love with me. I believe those who sing for a living have a talent from God and they’re meant to be heard and meant to use their voice for good.
Why music? Why do I love it so much? It brings you back. A song can bring back everything from a single moment years ago. A song can bring back those memories, those feelings, those physical details, everything; just as if they’re happening for the first time all over again. There is nothing more truthful and more open and honest than music. It will say things that words cannot say alone. Music will get you every time. It gets me every time and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
